Shingle Creek Basin Study
Project Description
The purpose of the project was to improve stormwater management throughout the Shingle Creek and West Branch basins in Osceola County by addressing flooding concerns, improving water quality, and protecting surface water and groundwater resources. The study area encompasses approximately 32 square miles, extending from the Osceola–Orange County line south to Lake Tohopekaliga.
The project was organized into three phases: Phase 1 - Inventory and Problem Definition; Phase 2 - Engineering Analysis of Existing Stormwater Systems; and Phase 3 - Alternatives Analysis. volerGROUP’s services were performed under Phase 2, beginning in January 2022, in support of the engineering evaluation of existing stormwater infrastructure and basin conditions.
Our scope included establishing horizontal and vertical survey control; surveying pond control structures and documenting grate, weir, slot, and orifice elevations and dimensions; locating and collecting elevations for drainage inlets and storm drainage pipes; surveying cross-drain and side-drain culverts; collecting ditch and canal cross sections; and locating Seasonal High-Water Elevations (SHWE). The survey data supported the hydraulic and hydrologic analysis of the basin and the development of improvements intended to reduce flooding, enhance water quality, and improve stormwater conveyance throughout the watershed ultimately discharging to Lake Tohopekaliga.
