Sub-Surface Utility Technician
As a Subsurface Utility Designation Technician, you will be responsible for locating, identifying, and documenting existing underground utilities using electromagnetic locating equipment, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and other advanced geophysical technologies. You will work under the direction of a Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM), Project Manager, or Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Manager, and will support transportation, municipal, aviation, utility, and private development projects by providing accurate utility designation services in accordance with ASCE 38-22 – Standard Guideline for Investigating and Documenting Existing Utilities. You will be expected to be safety-focused, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality utility mapping that reduces construction risk, protects critical infrastructure, and supports successful engineering design.
Responsibilites
Perform Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Quality Level B utility designation on transportation, municipal, aviation, utility, and private development projects.
Locate underground utilities using electromagnetic locating equipment, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), sondes, and other utility locating technologies.
Identify and designate water, wastewater, reclaimed water, storm sewer, electric, gas, communications, fiber optic, petroleum, irrigation, and other underground utility systems.
Interpret utility record drawings, as-built plans, GIS data, and utility maps prior to field investigations.
Mark designated utilities in the field using APWA Uniform Color Codes and company standards.
Assist with utility verification (Quality Level A/VVH) by supporting vacuum excavation crews when required.
Maintain detailed field notes, sketches, photographs, and digital documentation.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
2 years’ experience in utility locating, surveying, construction, or Subsurface Utility Engineering.
Basic understanding of underground utility infrastructure and construction practices.
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
